A brief history

Thrapston Badminton Club was formed in the late 1970s by a group of people who had attended Badminton For Beginners and Improvers evening classes at King John Middle School on Market Road, run by a local lady Elaine Cawdell.

Following the end of the classes and a wish by the players to continue playing badminton, a club was formed and club sessions continued to be played in the school hall at King John Middle School (now Thrapston Primary School) every Wednesday evening from the beginning of September to the end of April, up until March 2020 when Covid-19 restrictions prevented use of the school hall.

With the school hall remaining unavailable, club sessions were relocated to Raunds Manor Sports College, initially under Covid-19 restricted playing conditions and eventually, as of 19th July 2021 under normal playing conditions, with the number of courts available increased to three. Club sessions continue to be played at Raunds Manor Sports College.

The club has played matches in the Rushden and District Badminton League since 1980 and in the Northamptonshire Badminton Association League since around 2010.

In 1986, a Junior Badminton Club was started by Anne Gilbert, who had joined the club in 1982 and it continues today with Les Pratt in charge.  Many of the junior players went on to become regular members of the Senior club and some were accepted into the Junior County Squads,  playing matches for the County teams.  From 2013, the club played all its home matches, on a Tuesday evening, in the sports hall at Raunds Manor Sports College. Since 2022, the club plays mens matches, in both the RDBL and NBL, in the sports hall at Kettering Buccleuch Academy, and ladies matches, in the RDBL, in the sports hall at Raunds Manor Sports College.

Current day

Thrapston Badminton Club play their club sessions in the sports hall at Raunds Manor Sports College, on Wednesday evenings, from the beginning of September to the end of April.

Adult sessions are held from 8-00pm to 10-00pm, using feather shuttlecocks.

Due to a current lack of venue, Junior sessions are suspended until further notice.

On two to three club session evenings each season, a points handicapped tournament is held. This is just a bit of fun, and an opportunity for a bit of competitive badminton, in particular for members that only play socially.

The club competes in the Rushden and District Badminton League (RDBL) and the Northamptonshire Badminton League (NBL). Home matches are played on a Tuesday evening in the the sports hall at Raunds Manor Sports College.
